Property and Evidence
Property and Evidence reports to The Administrative Division. Property and Evidence is staffed by one Manager (Annette Lancaster) and two Evidence Technicians (Stephanie Gossett & JD Feaster). This division is responsible for the intake, tacking and storing of all property and evidence entered by the Lafayette Police Department.
To obtain any property, an appointment is required.

Only the owner can obtain their property. If the owner is not available, a notarized letter must be presented. No property will be released to a juvenile, only their legal guardian.
Location – Public Safety Center - 601 Columbia St, 4th Floor. When you arrive for your appointment, please call the number listed on window to let us know you have arrived.
Active Evidence
If your property is being held as evidence in a case, it will be held until the closure of the investigation and or court case. After a court case is concluded, items may still be held due to Indiana law, co-defendants, appeals and other circumstances. If you are requesting items before the closure of a case, written authorization from the Prosecutors office, Detective or a court ordered will be required. Property and Evidence personnel have no control over when an item in an active case gets released.
Firearms
A background check must be completed to obtain your firearm. Background checks take 2 hours to complete. NO firearm will be released if you are not legal to possess a firearm.
Money
All money will be returned to you in a check. It takes 3 weeks to obtain the check from the City of Lafayette, once money is authorized to be released. Property and Evidence personnel have no control of the time it takes to obtain the check. You will be contacted once the check is available for pick up.
Medication
Per department policy; NO medication of any kind will be returned.
Found Property
If property is turned in as “found”. A letter will be sent to the owner if an address is known. By law, items will be held for 90 days then destroyed if not claimed.
