History

The Bicycle and Pedestrian Citizen Advisory Committee was created by Ordinance 2017-21, on June 5th, 2017. The ordinance was amended by 2018-07 to increase the committee from seven to eleven members on April 2nd, 2018. A new section, Section 2.18.010 was added to the Lafayette Municipal code to create the committee.

Purpose

The purpose of the committee is stated in Municipal Code 2.18.010(B), and its duties are described in Municipal Code 2.18.040(C). In general, the Committee's duties are to serve as a citizen forum for discussion and recommendations of improvements to existing facilities and planning of new projects concerning safe access for cyclists, pedestrians and runner in the City of Lafayette. It shall also foster and promote safety programs, events, and education for all forms of transportation and users.

Membership

The Bicycle Pedestrian Citizen Advisory Committee members are appointed by the mayor, plus one (1) non-voting member from Lafayette Police Department, composed as follows:

One (1) designee of the Economic Development Department serving as the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator and Lafayette Bicycle and Pedestrian Citizen Advisory Committee’s staff support;

  • One (1) designee of the Director of Public Works;
  • One (1) member from a local bicycle club;
  • One (1) member from a local running club;
  • One (1) member from the Mayor’s Youth council;
  • Six (6) additional appointments will be given to Lafayette residents who are interested in serving as a member of the committee.

Terms shall be for two (2) years. Any vacancies shall be filled by an appointee of the Mayor for the balance of the term.
