[ARCHIVED] Two Children Struck by Vehicles

On Monday April 25, 2016, Lafayette Police officers responded to two separate incidents of children struck by vehicles within a short period of time.

The first incident happened at approximately 6:34 PM in the 1300-block of Union Street. A vehicle driving eastbound on Union Street had struck a small child, who had entered the roadway from the north. The child had entered the roadway between two parked cars prior to being struck. The child was transported to a local health care facility, and later to an Indianapolis hospital with substantial injuries. Lafayette Police Reconstruction attended the scene and conducted further investigation. The driver of the vehicle was cooperative with police, and submitted to toxicology testing. Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor at this time. Union Street was closed for approximately two hours during this investigation.

At approximately 6:51 PM, officers were sent to the 3300-block of Runyon Drive regarding a second small child that had been run over by a vehicle. Investigation at the scene determined that a small child was playing in or around a parked vehicle, when the vehicle came out of park and rolled over the child. This child was likewise transported to a Lafayette area hospital, and later transferred to an Indianapolis hospital with substantial injuries.

The investigation into both incidents is ongoing. Anyone with information into these incidents is asked to call the Lafayette Police Department at 807-1200, or the anonymous WeTip Hotline at 1-800-78-CRIME.
