Crime Scene Investigation

The Crime Scene Investigation Unit identifies, collects, and preserves evidence for examination. Types of CSI Investigations include: murders, suspicious deaths, stabbings, shootings (bodily injury and property damage), overdose deaths, battery (serious/moderate bodily injury type), child molests, child abuse, child sexual assault material, and autopsies. 

Responsibilities

The CSI Unit at the Lafayette Police Department consists of highly educated and thoroughly trained sworn and civilian professionals who receive specialized training in the following areas:

Personnel & Training

The Lafayette Police Department has 5 specially trained sworn crime scene investigators, as well as 3 civilian CSIs. These investigators have many specialized tools available to them that aid in the collection of evidence from a crime scene. Their training and experience focuses on various ways to collect evidence, the meaning of the placement of that evidence, and the type of examination to request on the evidence submitted to the Indiana State Police crime labs.
