About the Office
The City Attorney serves as the chief legal advisor to the City of Lafayette. Appointed by the Mayor, the City Attorney provides legal guidance and representation to the Mayor, City Council, department heads, city boards, commissions, and employees across all areas of city business.
What We Do
The City Attorney’s Office ensures that city operations comply with all applicable local, state, and federal laws. Our responsibilities include:
Legal Counsel
Advising city officials, departments, agencies, and boards on legal matters and regulatory compliance.Document Review & Drafting
Preparing and reviewing ordinances, resolutions, contracts, leases, deeds, and other legal documents.Legislation & Ordinance Enforcement
Drafting legislation for City Council and prosecuting violations of city ordinances.Litigation & Legal Representation
Representing the City and its employees in legal proceedings, including administrative hearings and lawsuits.Negotiations
Assisting with the negotiation of complex agreements that impact city development and services.Public Engagement
Attending public meetings and responding to resident concerns related to legal, health, and zoning issues.Property & Public Works
Coordinating title searches and legal documentation for roadway and infrastructure projects.
