Requirements and Steps for Employment as an LFD Recruit Firefighter:
To be appointed as a firefighter with the Lafayette Fire Department, an applicant must:
- Be a citizen of the United States.
- Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.
- Be less than forty (40) years of age, except:<\li>
- Persons who have been previously employed as firefighters who retain eligibility under applicable pension rules; and
- Veterans of the armed forces in accordance with the provisions of Indiana Code 36-8-4.7-1 et seq.
- Be a high school graduate as evidenced by a diploma issued by a high school accredited by the Department, or an agency authorized to accredit high schools, or possess an equivalency diploma (G.E.D.) issued by such an accredited high school.
- Possess a valid driver's license.
- Be of good moral character.
- Not have been convicted of a felony.
- Not have been convicted of a Class A misdemeanor (or equivalent in any other jurisdiction) within two (2) years.
- Not have been convicted of more than two (2) alcohol-related violations within two (2) years.
- Not have been convicted of operating under the influence of alcohol or any drugs within five (5) years.
- Not have illegally used any substance within two (2) years.
- Not have used any substance containing THC (regardless of legality) within one (1) year.
- Not have been dishonorably discharged from any branch of the United States military.
- Pass a general aptitude test in accordance with the provisions of Indiana Code 36-8-3.5-12(d).
- Pass the CPAT physical agility test.
- Successfully complete a seventy-five (75) foot ladder climb at a seventy-five (75) degree angle.
- Submit to and pass a thorough background investigation.
- Submit to two (2) oral interviews.
- Submit to a polygraph examination.
- Meet minimum vision screening standards as determined by the Indiana Public Retirement Fund (PERF).
- Possess adequate means of transportation between the applicant's residence and the City of Lafayette.
- Maintain telephone service to communicate with the Department.
- Comply with all statutory requirements under applicable law.
- Meet any other requirements established by the Merit Commission for appointment to the Department
