The Lafayette Fire Department and Jefferson High School have entered into a partnership to create the LFD / JHS Fire & Rescue Academy. This partnership allows local high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to be exposed to the fire service as a career option. The program runs the full length of one school year. As high school students, they have the ability to become IDHS certified in Mandatory Firefighter, Hazmat Awareness, Hazmat Operations, Firefighter 1 & 2, and Technical Rescue Awareness when they reach their 18th birthday. These are the certifications that many fire departments require prior to hiring or before they can operate as a firefighter. With this course being a Dual Credit College coursework, each student has the ability to receive 12 college level credits.
